UGentMemoire

UGentMemorie is the virtual memory of Ghent University. It brings the memory, history and heritage of the university together. The main theme of the project is the impact of the city, society and science on the university and vice versa. Specific subjects are expanded upon in dossiers, exhibits and this virtual museum.

UGentMemorie is more than a showcase for history. It actively seeks out memories thorough witness testimonies, interviews and archival research. Moreover, UGentMemorie stimulates researchers and students to research the history of the university, its scientists and academics, its buildings, cultural heritage as well as the knowledge it produced. It further offers a platform to convey the results of this research to a broader public. UGentMemorie also regularly organizes activities that examine, explain and actualize the history of the university.

Horizon 200 years Ghent University

Following the motto Dare to commemorate! UGentMemorie will celebrate the bicentennial of the university in an innovative and engaging way. Through a range of research and public activities the university and its rich history of academic and societal engagement will be explored. The final goal of the project will be a large overview exhibition in the Ghent city museum, STAM.

Organization

UGentMemorie is an initiative of the History department and the Institute for Public History. The project follows in the footsteps of the scientific and societal project of Ghent University ‘August Vermeylen and his networks’ which ran from 2008-2011. This project was also developed in the History department under the supervision of Gita Deneckere and Christophe Verbruggen and undertaken by Fien Danniau and Ruben Mantels. The project resulted in the August Vermeylen Year 2010-2011 at Ghent University.
