Bachelor's internship (UGent only)

The bachelor's internship is part of the Public History program which starts in the academic year 2016-2017.

What does the bachelor's internship consist of?

You do an internship of 120 hours in the second semester, supervised by a mentor in an organization or institution in the field of public history. These can be classic heritage institutions (museums, archives, heritage cells, centers of expertise), but also a press organization, executive institution, public service, tourist or sociocultural organization.

  1. You observe the functioning of the internship institution
  2. You participate in the workings of the internship institution by performing a task in the field of public history, supervised by your internship mentor. The assignment is determined beforehand after consultation with the responsible teachers and it can span all the possible phases in the 'production' of a public historical product: practical or content-related preliminary research, preliminary literature study, collecting documents, image or text editing, scenario writing, design, organizing activities, guiding, leading focus groups, collecting interviews, ...
! Pure inventorial or administrative tasks without any public historical component are not allowed during this internship.

How do you choose an internship?

  • Or you choose an internship post from a list of vacancies that is published on www.ipg.ugent.be. You give us your motivated top 3.
  • Or you search for an internship post or idea yourself. Before making a commitment, you have to get the teaching assistant's approval. Internships that exceed the limit of 120 hours and interfere systematically with your attendance in the history program's courses, are not allowed.

Supervision

  • During your internship, you need an internship mentor at the internship institution who supervises you socially and with respect to content.
  • Teaching assistant Fien Danniau provides support from UGent with practical and content-related issues and mediates with your internship mentor if necessary.
  • Halfway the semester the till then gathered internship experiences are discussed in small groups.

Evaluation

  1. You write a screening of your internship institution, based on your observations, policy documents, interviews, ... In what context does the internship institution operate and what are its tasks? What relationship does the institution entertain with history? And with the public? You reflect on (the activities of) the internship institution based on what you have learned in the course History and Society.
  2. You write an internship report in which you throw light on your internship tasks and results. You add a portfolio of the performed tasks. What did you learn about public history and about your own skills?
  3. Your internship mentor provides a motivated grade for your communication and content-related skills.

Practical

  • Students who wish to do an internship in their third bachelor's year, have to subscribe for the entire public history program.
  • Erasmus students who reside abroad during the first semester can do an internship provided that they take up an equivalent to the course History and Society at their guest university.
  • The internship consists of 120 hours (equivalent to 15 working days) and is taken up in the second semester, i.e. in February, March, April and/or May.
  • The exact content of your internship is to be agreed upon with your internship mentor and depends on your course timetable and the timing of the assignment.
  • We advize you to spend as many hours as possible on location at the internship institution. Not only because this helps to make a proper observation of the institution's functioning, but also because this interaction appeals to and strengthens your social skills.
  • We inform you during November via Minerva when the list of internship vacancies is available. You provide us with a motivated top 3 of preferred internship institutions at the beginning of December so that you know before the Christmas break where you will do your internship.
  • You are given a UGent internship contract via an online application (cfr. Minerva).
  • The internship is not remunerated. In case of unforeseen or insurmountable costs, you contact Fien Danniau.
